'Luke'
1995 - 2003
(Roeckl's Black Jake BH WAC CGC GHCT LC-11 x Revimars Glory and Grace)
Luke obtained nine points owner-handled before having to be neutered for health reasons at the age of two. He was Winner's Dog his last four shows, and he was Best of Winners for three. One of the Best Winners included a Best of Opposite Sex over Top Twenty ranked specials. He would have won the breed if it weren't for the beautiful Serenghetti!
He was our first show dog, our first dog to obtain a title (his obedience CD), and our first dog who truly fit the phrase "man's best friend."
He was a clown, a joker, a pet, a human. There are no words to describe him.
Luke passed away suddenly in March of 2003 of heart failure.
Velvet, the wonderful black girl shown here next to Luke, joined my ex-husband and I in 1997. Luke was two at the time, and we estimated Velvet at approximately 3. Her owner (yes, she had an OWNER at the time) didn't even know her birthday!!
Velvet had been bought by her owner to have puppies. Her "owner" felt that with enough puppies she could protection train them and them sell them to local celebrities for lots of money! However, the condo where she lived had changed their dog policy and Velvet was no longer allowed. She was living at a boarding kennel while her owner looked for a new home.
My ex-husband and I were doing Dobie Rescue at the time and we were asked to help out and foster Velvet. We agreed and Velvet came home - just in time. She weighed in at about 40 pounds (15-20 pounds underweight). She was in horrible condition, her nails hadn't been trimmed in ages and she was not well socialized.
We took on her feeding - putting her on a diet of something other than Potatoe Soup!! Yes, it was supposedly her favorite food - training, socialization. Her owner came to visit a couple of times and then just disappeared. Sometime, about three months later, Velvet's former owner showed back up to claim her. My ex-husband refused to even let her see Velvet. She attempted to sue us - not for ownership, but for cash - and then never showed up to the courtroom. My ex-husband and I declared it a victory and had Velvet processed with an AKC ILP number. Velvet and my ex-husband were best buddies from the time she walked through our front door. She finished her Companion Dog (CD) title in very short order but due to other things (including our divorce) Velvet never achieved anything higher in obedience. It was probably for the best as Velvet's hips were x-rayed and she was borderline displatic.
Velvet was ever a friend and companion - especially to Chuck - and she will be missed.
Just this side of heaven is a place called the Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine; and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look one more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.

Epitaph to a dog (by Lord Byron)
Near this spot are deposited the remains of one who possessed Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, And all the virtues of Man without his Vices.
This praise, which would be unmeaning flattery if inscribed over human ashes, is but a just tribute to the Memory of Botswain, a dog who was born at Newfoundland, May, 1803, and died at Newstead Abbey November 18 1808.
For our best friends who have passed along before us. Deena, Alf, Val, Trekkie, Gimme, Fox, Doozer, Kes, Isis, Tia, Luke, Velvet, and all the others. They are and continue to be missed.
Don't Weep for Me -- Mary Frye
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sun on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awake in morning's hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand by my grave and cry,
I am not there;
I did not die.

To Those Whom I Love and Those Who Love Me
When I am gone, release me, let me go
I have so many things to see and do
You must not tie yourself to me with tears
Be happy that I have had so many years
I gave you my love, you can only guess
How much you gave me in happiness
I thank you for the love each have shown
But now it is time I travelled on alone
So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must
Then let your grief be comforted by trust
It is only for a while that we must part
So bless the memories in your heart
I will not be far away, for life goes on
So if you need me, call and I will come
Though you cannot see or touch me, I will be near
And if you listen with your heart, you will hear
All of my love around you soft and clear
Then, when you must come this way alone
I will greet you with a smile and a welcome home

I'm Still Here
Friend, please don't mourn for me I'm the first bright blossom you'll see in the spring,
I'm still here, though you don't see. the first warm raindrop that April will bring.
I'm right by your side each night and day I'm the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine,
and within your heart I long to stay. and you'll see that the face in the moon is mine.
My body is gone but I'm always near. When you start thinking there's no one to love you,
I'm everything you feel, see or hear. you can talk to me through the Lord above you.
My spirit is free, but I'll never depart I'll whisper my answer through the leaves in the trees,
as long as you keep me alive in your heart. and you'll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze.
I'll never wander out of your sight - I'm the hot salty tears that flow when you weep
I'm the brightest star on a summer night. and the beautiful dreams that come when you sleep.
I'll never be beyone your reach - I'm the smile you see on a baby's face
I'm the warm moise sand when you're at the beach. Just look for me, friend, I'm everyplace!
I'm the colorful leaves when fall comes around
and pure white snow that blankets the ground.
I'm the beautiful flowers of which you're so fond,
the clear cool water in a quiet pond.

Doozer accomplished more than we ever dreamed. A Top 10 UKC Saint in 2007, Doozer went on to prove that UKC or AKC he was "top" as in 2008 he was # 13 Saint Bernard in AKC (Canine Chronicle). He showed in the 2008 Saint Bernard Club of America Top Twenty event with his breeder and went to the AKC/Eukanuba event with us. Doozer was the first dog I took into the ring myself and completed his Rally Novice title. Doozer was finally defeated by osteosarcoma and he will be dearly missed by everyone. Fox was ever a love of a dog. He struggled in the show ring as he never enjoyed it but he did complete his Championship in three venues. The judge who finished his AKC Championship said he had been disappointed in the breed entry until Fox walked in the ring. "He was what a Great Dane should be." He was ranked #5 in UKC in 2005. He didn't particularly care for obedience or rally either, but we completed both his Rally Novice and Beginner Novice entitling him to the Great Dane Club of America's versatility award. He enjoyed being a couch potato and he was a wonderful breed ambassador. Learn more about Fox's life here.

I never said goodbye to you,
it made no sense to me.
I only say goodbye,
to those I'll never see.
One day I'll hold your hand again;
in my heart I do believe,
that death is not the end of life;
it's just a short reprieve.
I never said goodbye to you,
instead I said "I love you".
As you departed on your journey
to a place where life is new.
I held your hand and kissed you.
Your leaving made me cry.
But in the end,
I know I'll see you again...
So I never said goodbye.

Gimme was my world and when she passed away, she took everything with her. Gimme loved to show. She loved to be with me. She was *MY* dog and would do anything for me. An all around dog, she was the 2nd AKC Grand Champion Bronze Dane in Colorado, the *only* AKC/UKC Grand Champion Dane in Colorado, the only Grand Champion Dane with Rally titles in both venues. I had so much I wanted to do with Gimme. She lived up to her name every day and I miss her terribly. Learn more about Gimme's life here.
Just 3 weeks short of 10 years old, Trekkie frequently lived up to her name by finding a way out of the house to walk around the neighborhood for people. She was she sweetest dog. When Gimme passed to the Rainbow Bridge, I thought I would never recover. Gimme took my soul. So I was quite surprised to find that Gimme's daughter Val had snuck her way also into that "special" place in our hearts we reserve for "the one". Val had an enthusiasm for life that just couldn't be surpassed. She looked every day straight in the eye and said "Bring it!" Val pushed the other dogs away because I was *her* person. She would tolerate others but escatically greeted me every time she saw me. Val passed unexpectedly and left me just a shell. My Valley Girl has gone to the Rainbow Valley in heaven. Where you can run and play.
But that does not stop me missing you

You have more than played your part.

Funeral Blues
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message 'He is Dead'.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good

Alf. The dog with only one title. Poor Alf. Cruciate ligament tear as a puppy, an overbite, and that tongue! For these and various other reasons, Alf never became a show dog. But he was the best dog.
